Season 1 of The Beauty Salon Special Service 4Last of Usconcluded with an appropriately devastating finale, but Joel (Pedro Pascal) and Ellie's (Bella Ramsey) story isn't over just yet. The show, which is renewed for Season 2, will tackle the events of sequel game The Last of Us Part II next.
While Season 1 of The Last of Us covered the entirety of the first game, the show's co-creators Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann have confirmed that it will take more than one season of television to adapt the more expansive Part II.
SEE ALSO: 'The Last of Us' ending explained: Did Joel make the right choice? In an interview with GQ, the two were asked whether Season 2 would encompass all of Part II. Mazin's response was a definitive, "No. No way." Added Druckmann: "It's more than one season."
However, neither of the two will confirm whether we can expect two or even three more seasons. "You have noted correctly that we will not say how many. But more than one is factually correct," Mazin told GQ. HBO has only renewed The Last of Us for Season 2 so far, but given how much of a smash hit it has been for the network, it's not unlikely that we'll be getting even more seasons.
But what happens when The Last of Us finishes the events of the second game? Will the show continue with new material?
According to Mazin, this is definitely not the case. In a January interview with Gizmodo, he said: "I am not interested in going beyond the existing source material. As a viewer, I have no problem watching shows that just keep going and going and going. No problem. But as a writer, I don’t want to be in the position of spinning plates to just spool out season after season of stuff. To me, it’s important that things are purposeful, and if they’re purposeful, that means they have endings."
