AOL announced back in October that its beloved Instant Messenger service would be discontinued. Sadly, that day has arrived. AIM may be ded, but our memories will live on 4ever.

"AIM tapped into new digital technologies and ignited a cultural shift, but the way in which we communicate with each other has profoundly changed," AOL said in a blog post.

Change is inevitable, especially in the tech world. But what a loss, man. What. A. Loss.

As to be expected, everyone is taking the death of AIM very hard. I mean, sure, no one used it to communicate anymore, but it was nice just knowing it was there.

AIM was where you worked up the courage to send a message to your childhood crush, where you posted awkward away messages you now profoundly regret, and where you typed in song lyrics you thought would make you sound cool.

To cope, Twitter users are sharing their first screen names, memorable statuses, sadness, and thanks.
