After weeks of Game of Thronesteasers and synaesthetic cinema and polymorphous eroticismpromotional images (HBO toying with us, in other words), we finallyhave some new footage to work with.
The new Season 7 trailer has officially landed. And it wouldn't be a new trailer if we didn't analyse it obsessively, would it?
SEE ALSO: These 7 'Game of Thrones' trailer moments mean more than you thinkSo let's talk about that shot of Daenerys standing in the Chamber of the Painted Table at Dragonstone, surveying what looks like a battle map of Westeros.
Shortly after the trailer went up, Reddit user AccidentalGamer shared a highlighted version of the shot in an attempt to analyse what the various armies might be doing.
Based on the discussion on Reddit -- and a few of our own observations -- here are some possible conclusions we can draw:
The shapes that stand out most clearly on that map are the two miniature boats at the far end of the table, closest to Dany. Based on the shape of the table we can assume that Dany is standing at the Southern end of Westeros, facing North. This means the boats are in Dorne, with the one on the left positioned around Sunspear (Dorne's capital) and the one on the right close to the border between Dorne and the Reach.
Based on the shape of the ships' sails, we can safely assume these represent Dany's fleet:
From Dragonstone, it would make sense for Dorne to be one of Daenerys' first targets -- the Dornish are old allies of the Targaryens after all, and no friends to the Lannisters. The ship at Sunspear could represent a section of Dany's fleet that went to the capital to solidify an alliance, perhaps, while the fleet in the West could be there for military support (possibly to enforce the Dornish border against invading Lannisters/Greyjoys).
This is where the analysis gets a little murky. It's hard to tell from the picture above, but those cluttered figures look a bit like fallen armies -- possibly representing the site of a battle. Based on the map we thinkthis area would be roughly around Highgarden/the Shield Islands -- and if Euron Greyjoy ends up allying with Cersei, that would make a lot of sense (in George R. R. Martin's books, the Shield Islands are one of Euron's first targets).
Not too much to read into this one. We don't know for sure, but the different design of this ship means it probably represents the enemy forces -- most likely the Lannister base in King's Landing.
The only conclusion we can really draw is one of timing. Chances are, this scene with Dany and Tryion takes place a little way into Season 7, when Dany's invasion already in full swing and skirmishes are breaking out across the Reach as armies tussle for control of Southern Westeros.
The ship in King's Landing most likely represents Cersei's main stronghold -- and, ultimately, Daenerys' final target.
