But even when it was comforting us, TV could also be cruel. Below, check out 10 of the most devastating TV moments of 2016.

SEE ALSO: 10 scary movies that have nothing to do with horrorSeason 1 of Insecurehinges upon how Issa treats Lawrence. She starts out by breaking up with him, tries to make it work and when things seem to be going well she couldn't resist the Daniel-shaped question mark dangling along in her path. When Lawrence finds out she cheated, he's done. He won't even talk to Issa, so when he calls in the middle of her girls' trip she drops everything for the chance to talk. Unfortunately, the window closes fast.
The two older Gilmore Girls have always had a turbulent relationship, and now there's no Richard to hold them together. After the funeral, Lorelai can't even summon a heartwarming story about her father as their own complicated relationship torments her. She and Emily end up, as we've seen them before, shouting at each other in the kitchen -- but it stings worse than ever knowing that they turned to hostility instead of being there for each other in a time of need.
SEE ALSO: The best YA books of 2016Comic book fans may have seen it coming, but nothing could've prepared us TV viewers for the visceral shock of Glenn’s brutal murder at the hands of Negan, just moments after the villain had dispatched another fan-favorite character, Abraham. It was a death that was torn right from the pages of Robert Kirkman’s graphic novel (emphasis on graphic), but seeing our beloved pizza delivery boy getting his skull bashed in was still a stomach-churning affair that will haunt fans and his co-stars for a long time to come. -Laura Prudom, TV Editor
Season 3 of You're The Worst will be known asthe most emotionally grueling 13-episode stretch the cutting comedy has churned out. It's hard to pick a highlight for the masochistic viewer. Was it Paul confessing to being a willful cuckold? Edgar drinking alone on the side of the road? Jimmy hurling his father's ashes over a gate by night? Ultimately, the last moments of the finale were the clincher; that after all the work, the pain and the constant, unyielding job of just being a person Jimmy could unravel back to square one...and break Gretchen's heart in the process.
Truthfully, every existing episode of freshman drama This Is Uscould go on this list, because it regularly destroys the viewer with the intricacies of life and family. We knew that up front, though, when in the pilot the doctor delivering Jack and Rebecca's babies told them that the third triplet didn't make it and that now they had to make something resembling lemonade from "the sourest lemon life has to offer."
Even if you knew it was coming (Thanks, Internet!), watching Poussey's final, futile struggle was excruciating. Where Orange is the New Blackdid a service to its viewers, though, was in the aftermath. The program showed how her death affected everyone from Taystee to the meth heads to whom her very existence was a sign of stability and comfort.
We learn about the sisterly bond between our protagonist and her best friend over the course of the series' six-episode first season, and halfway through that we learn that Fleabag still calls Boo's cell phone during tough times just to hear her friend's voice. It isn't a moment that will elicit tears or screaming but the shock feels like being doused in ice water.
No matter who you want on the Iron Throne, every fan of HBO's sprawling fantasy had a soft spot for a man of few words who committed himself to guarding Bran Stark. As Bran wargs into a flashback, he communicates to present Hodor through past Hodor, and instead of tearing through space and time, he tears through Hodor's very mind. Bran inadvertently destroyed Hodor's entire life, a fact made instantly more horrific as we see that life come to an end outside that mountain cave.
Starz’s genre-blending historical drama makes a habit out of devastating us on a weekly basis, but nothing can compare to the agony of watching Claire Fraser singing a heartbreaking lullaby to her stillborn daughter, Faith, before having to say goodbye to her forever. The loss redefined (and ultimately strengthened) Claire’s relationship with her husband, and allowed Caitriona Balfe to give the performance of the year, gracefully and poignantly articulating the arc of Claire’s grief in an episode that was both riveting and harrowing. -Laura Prudom
At around 3:30 a.m ET on November 9th, the election came to a close with news anchors on television declaring Donald Trump had definitively won the electoral college and would become the next President of the United States of America.
Maybe you didn't know how invested you were in Hillary, in a non-Trump regime, or in basic human rights until you heard those words and realized exactly what this nation signed itself up for. But you know now and you'll remember that fear for the next four years. Do not forget.
