Though she championed the project for years,Dear Utol (2025): Doctor, Doctor I'm Sick Episode 41 even executive producer Selena Gomez couldn't have predicted the success of 13 Reasons Why.
"I'm a little overwhelmed and very surprised," she told E! News. "I mean I believed in the project for so long and I understood what the message was."

"So, I'm overwhelmed that's it's doing as well as it's doing."
When asked about Season 2, Gomez was coy, but didn't divulge much.
Gomez came to the project after reading the book in her teen years.
"I just believed in what it was -- when I read the book, I thought that it was something that I could relate to my fans in particular. I see it constantly from kids who are authentic and telling me what they feel and what they go through," Gomez said at a panel for the show in February. Though she was originally in the conversation about playing Hannah, Gomez said she can't imagine anyone but Langford in that role now.
"It just worked out the way it was supposed to and I'm glad I got to still watch it happen."
