But at Apple's Worldwide Developer Conference in San Jose on Monday, the new iOS 12 included a small-but-monumental change for a lot of drivers: support for third-party navigation apps.

Apple's Susan Prescott showed a demo of the new CarPlay app with three mapping app choices -- not just the usual icon for Apple Maps. Waze, Google Maps, and a popular Chinese mapping app were all available. Now users can use their preferred app while driving without having to ditch the iPhone.

The internet cheered and Android-based phone companies probably groaned that Apple now has given in to its users' greatest driving needs -- even if it means admitting its navigation app can't stand up to the competition.
